PROJECT
#child sponsorship #construction #medical
Guatemala has some of the neediest and most vulnerable children in the world. Scores of Guatemalan children live without the most basic necessities and struggle to survive day-to-day. Many live in shacks built out of miscellaneous materials, lack access to proper nutrition, and do not have access to a proper education.
The main community we have the opportunity to serve at is a feeding center and after school program for at-risk youth in Escuintla, Guatemala. For the sponsored children in Escuintla and their families, we are able to host a medical outreach, as well as spending time with the kids playing games, doing VBS activities, crafts, health sensitization, and light construction. We also work in a remote community located between Escuintla and Guatemala City, and in the Lake Atitlan region.
In the Lake Atitlan region, nearby Panajachel, there are several small Mayan communities where people still lack many basic necessities. Most people in these communities still speak their local Mayan language, Kachikel. We have the opportunity to visit a few small communities and serve them with medical outreaches and playing with the children.

Additionally, we highly recommend this video series Helping Without Hurting for all of our mission trips. This series is based on the book, When Helping Hurts.
ADVENTURE
For this excursion, we spend the day exploring historic Antigua, located in the shadow of the extinct Agua volcano. Shop for coffee, chocolate, and jade, or check out the historic church ruins dating back to the 1500s. Antigua is the most popular tourist destination in Guatemala and you’ll enjoy walking through the cobblestone streets, shopping at the market, or visiting various museums.
